St.Martin im Mühlkreis towers over the soft hills of the Mühlviertel, between the Danube, the great and famous European river and the Pesenbach, a wild and romantic little stream which flows through a picturesque nature reserve, and the charming vale of the Große Mühl, one of the two streams that gave their name to the Mühlviertel.
For centuries granite has shaped and influenced the economic system and the culture of this region. All kinds of Austrian rocks are on display in the informative „Granite World of Experience“- Austria's biggest geological teaching path. A historic quarry generates the feeling of an archaic arena.
Neuhaus Castle was built as a hunting lodge 800 years ago by the bishops who resided at Passau on the Danube.
The privately owned Hofstetten Brewery dates back to 1449 and the family Krammer has owned Austria`s oldest brewery since 1847. High quality hops from the local area is used for brewing very special beers.
St. Martin in Mühlkreis has become a paradise for keen athletes and for those who want to relax. St. Martin town centre and the sunny, charming village of Untermühl are not only perfect starting points for hiking-, nordic walking- and cycling tours, but the extensive but easy Passau-Danube trail is an excellent option for cyclists and skaters. In winter it is best to enjoy the numerous, perfectly prepared cross-country ski trails, or indulge in snowshoe-hiking or join locals curling on the frozen ponds. |
